What’s love got to do with it?

BEFORE TIGER WOODS took to the fairways at last week’s Barclays PGA tournament, the ”cheetah” sat down for a perfunctory pre-tourney press conference.

Reporters started things off with a few run of the mill golf-related queries: “Drive well today?”; “How many drivers will you hit out there?”; “Have you made the decision now to change your swing?”

But this was no ordinary media availability for Tiger. That same day, Wednesday, People Magazine had published an exclusive interview with his now ex-wife Elin, a big scoop that was dominating the news.

New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser — who admits she knows “as much about golf as I do about divorce” — was in attendance, and decided to dig deeper than the golf-beat writers had.

“Tiger, in today’s People Magazine Elin describes the end of your marriage like a death where she feels grief, she hopes to forgive one day,” she said. ”I’m wondering, do you still love her?”

Not a question golfers typically field at press events, to be sure.

“I wish her the best in everything,” Woods replied. “You know, it’s a sad time in our lives. And we’re looking forward to … how we can help our kids the best way we possibly can. And that’s the most important thing.”

Unsatisfied with Tiger’s talking points, Peyser persisted: “Do you still love her?” she asked, again.

Woods repeated his previous statement, “That’s the most important thing,” and thus successfully dodged Peyser’s attempts to probe his heart. He did go on to discuss the impact the domestic implosion was having on his game, however.

I get that Peyser was looking for a great quote when she asked Tiger if he still loved Elin, and perhaps she saw herself as representing all the jilted women out there who empathize with poor Elin’s plight and want to rip Tiger’s head off.

Even if she does write for the sensationalistic Post, though, Peyser’s manipulative question had no place at a golf tournament press conference; leave that gossipy shite for People and US Weekly.

Besides, the answer should be pretty obvious: A guy who truly loves his wife doesn’t go out and shag boatloads of barfly bimbos.
