Get in ma belly!

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY today, so rather than write a serious, thought-provoking post, I thought I’d indulge in a little fantasizing about what may just be the greatest food invention of all time: deep-fried beer.

You heard me right: ravioli-like pieces of salty pretzel dough filled with beer and dunked into a deep fryer. My god, sweet dreams are made of these.

“It tastes like you took a bite of hot pretzel dough and then took a drink of beer,” inventor Mark Zable, who’s entering his recipe in the Texas state fair’s 2010 fried food competition, told the Toronto Star.

Sounds like a bit of paradise right there.

The winning recipe at the Texas state fair competition last year was fried butter, another devilish delight that, as it turns out, debuted this summer at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. From what I hear, it’s all the rage at the moment.

And if that’s any indication of what to expect next year here in the T-dot, my 32nd b-day might well be spent at the CNE, chowing down on a heaping plate of deep-fried beer.

Oh sure it’s a heart attack just waiting to happen, but to quote Canadian 80s rockers Trooper – and who doesn’t every once in a while? – “we’re here for a good time, not a long time.”

Heh, I read this post and thought to myself “Wouldn’t it be funny if your birthday post was like, the only time I DON’T comment on your blog.” But I can’t help myself.

Fried beer sure does sound great, I could see that catching on down here. I ate myself a packet of Burger Rings last night, hmm. Not to be confused with Ring Burgers, which means something entirely different down here.

Oh look at that. Your birthday is only one day off the anniversary of the Beslan massacre, where Buddhists, Christians, Jews, misunderstanders of the peaceful religion of islam slaughtered and raped hundreds of school children. I bet the Russians felt really culturally enriched after that.

What’s that? The media have hardly covered the anniversary?

    Happy Birthday!

Aw shucks. I’ll just have to settle for Diana having died on my b-day. I remember being out at the bar back in 97, and everyone getting set to buy me drinks. Then the pictures from Paris came on the TV. Really killed the whole “let’s do shots!” vibe.
